In March of 2001, the Chicago Schutzhund Verein was founded by four individuals.
Raymond Silvertrust studied helper work and show training in Austria and Germany. He has served as chief helper at three schutzhund clubs and is widely recognized as a top training helper.  He is a member of the SV (the German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany) and served on the executive board of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America-WDA. Our second founder was Dr. Herbert Preiser, longtime member of the SV and one of the most renowned and influential breeders of German Shepherd Dogs in the United States for more than five decades. He was instrumental in bringing the sport of Schutzhund back to the U.S. in the 1960s. He was a founding member of NASA, the first national schutzhund organization in the U.S. precursor of United Schutzhund Clubs of America. He also founded the first schutzhund club in the Midwest, His von der Neuen Welt kennel bred many conformation show champions and was known world-wide

Third was Charles Carroll, Chuck became involved in Schutzhund in the 1980s and before helping to found the Chicago Schutzhund Verein, he was a member of the Midwest American Schutzhund Club, the Illinis Badger Schutzhund Club and the Greater Chicago Schutzhund Club. Chuck often worked as a helper when needed and also trained in Search and Rescue.

Fourth was Skyler Silvertrust, Raymond Silvertrust's son, who in 2003 became the  youngest person in the United States to become certified as a Schutzhund Club Helper. Subsequently, he qualified as a certified Regional Trial Helper which allows him to work at regional championship trials. Skyler has also been recognized as a top conformation show handler, taking many dogs to winning positions. At international championship (sieger) conformation shows, At these shows, regularly attended by German breeders and competitors, he is often mistaken for a top German show handler.

To Quote Geoffrey Chaucer, "Time and Tide wait for no man."--The future of our Club

Chuck Carroll passed away in 2011 and Dr, Herbert Preiser passed away in 2020. Skyler Silvertrust, due to family obligations and his demanding corporate law firm job, is rarely able to join us. Ray Silvertrust continues to run training at our Libertyville location.

Our Future--We welcome Ed and Karina Calderon

Ed Calderon has been involved in schutzhund sport for more than 25 years. He is a national level schutzhund helper, the very highest rating one can have. In addtion, he is also a top training helper and a sought after show handler. He is the owner of EC Dog Sports and also operates a boarding kennel for German Shepherd Dogs.

Karina Calderon has been involved with German Shepherd Dogs for virtually all of her life. She has been a conformation show handler more than 10 years and now is recognized as one of the best show handlers in the United States. She is one of the very few American show handlers to have shown dogs at the German Sieger Show in Nurnberg. Her Aus dem Meer kennel is producing beautiful conformation dogs with great temperaments.
